Program Report: “Psychological Trauma or Invisible Wounds”

Event Details:

  • Date: August 15, 2025
  • Time: 7:00–9:00 AM Afghanistan / 10:30–12:30 PM Toronto, Canada
  • Speaker: Farzaneh Rahimi, Social Psychology Consultant
  • Participants: 22

The session officially began with opening remarks by Hoviat’s coordinator in Afghanistan. Dr. Farzaneh Rahimi then delivered a detailed presentation on psychological trauma, or “invisible wounds.” She explained the definition of trauma, its types (acute, chronic, developmental, and hidden), major causes of psychological trauma among Afghan women (war, domestic violence, cultural and legal restrictions, poverty, and forced marriages), and the consequences of untreated trauma.

Dr. Rahimi also discussed initial support strategies such as psychological counseling, participation in support groups, relaxation activities, and the role of existing social resources. On the other hand, barriers to receiving mental health support—such as limited psychological services, social stigma around therapy, and economic and cultural restrictions—were addressed.

Practical Session:
Participants engaged in a deep-breathing exercise to experience practical techniques for calming the mind and body. Following this, a safe and open space was created for participants to share personal challenges and receive scientifically grounded guidance from the consultant.

Feedback and Outcomes:
The program continued with a Q&A and personal experience sharing. The conversation space was inspiring, and participants expressed satisfaction while emphasizing the importance of continuing such programs for the psychological and social support of women.

Conclusion:
This session represented a valuable step toward raising awareness, reducing social stigma around mental health, and fostering connections among women for mutual support. Hoviat remains committed to providing educational and supportive programs that create a safe environment for women to share their stories and enhance their psychological and social empowerment.
